Recap

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Justin Kahut kicked a 44-yard field goal late in the first half and No. 24 Oregon State beat No. 18 Pittsburgh 3-0 Wednesday in a defensive struggle at the Sun Bowl.

The game included 20 punts and nine sacks. Pitt kicker Connor Lee tried a 58-yard field goal in the closing minutes but the ball, helped by a steady wind, dropped just short of the crossbar.

The Beavers (9-4) improved to 5-0 in bowls since coach Mike Riley began his second stint as their coach in 2003. Pitt (9-4) managed just 178 total yards.

It was the lowest-scoring Sun Bowl since a scoreless tie in 1940 between Catholic and Arizona State.

Game Notes

  • Pitt's mark of 149 consecutive games without being shutout was broken with its 3-0 loss. The Panthers had not been held scoreless since a 45-0 loss to Miami on Sept. 28, 1996. The number was the longest active streak among Big East members.

  • OL Chase Clowser earned his first career start for the injured Jason Pinkston, in his last career game.

  • LB Scott McKillop's interception late in the second quarter is the third of his career and his second this season.

  • McKillop's 11 tackles on the day gives him 15 double-figure tackle games in his career.

  • McKillop has also moved into the top 10 in all-time tackles with 344 in his career, including 11 on the day. The senior tied Lewis Moore for 10th, who totaled 344 from 2000-03.

  • Dom DeCicco's fumble recovery in the first quarter was the first of his career.

  • Pitt's five sacks on Oregon State ties as the most against the Beavers all season. Oregon State averaged just one sack allowed per game entering the contest. Sacks were made by: Greg Romeus (2), Mick Williams, Greg Williams and Austin Ransom.

  Oregon State Team Notes

  • Neither team scored in the first quarter. It marked just the third time the Beavers and their opponent have gone into the second quarter with no score. The first came in the season opener at Stanford and the second in the Beavers’ final road game at Arizona.

  • The Beavers and Panthers combined for three first-half points, the least in a first half this season. Oregon State and UCLA went into halftime with a 3-3 tie on Nov. 8 and OSU and Arizona were tied at three as well. Both times Oregon State earned road victories.

  • The last time Oregon State won a game by a score of 3-0 was in 1967 when they beat No. 1 USC in Corvallis.
