Wichita State's Garza Storms To Day One Lead
At Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic
EL PASO, Texas (November 23, 2009) — Wichita State's Dustin Garza was a steady member of the leader board for most of the day, but it was four-under performance on the back nine of his second round that put the senior from Mission, Texas, in control of the the 35th Annual Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Monday during the opening day of the event held at the 6,842-yard, par-71
at El Paso Country Club.
Garza closed out 36 holes on the first day with an 11-under par total 131, which is the lowest opening 36 holes since Luke List carded a 130 in 2006.
Charlotte's Corey Nagy jumped out the the first round lead tie with Garza at seven-under 64, marking the first time in the history of the tournament that the same player has led the first round in consecutive years. Nagy led the first two rounds of last year's tournament.
Alabama's Hunter Hamrick and Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann both notched consecutive rounds in the 60s to tie for second after two rounds and stay within striking distance at two strokes back at nine-under par. Georgia's Russell Henley and Washington's Nick Taylor are three strokes back at eight-under.
Thewarm weather did produce 11 eagles, up from just eight eagles during the first two rounds last year and seven in 2007.
The third and final round is
set to start at 8 a.m. at El Paso Country Club.
Each university that has a
player participating in the tournament will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over
the past 33 years, the Sun Bowl Association has donated over $640,000 to
collegiate golf through this scholarship program.
