The
2006 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic marks the 32nd
year of the event. Over the years, many Golf Classic competitors have
gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers’
Association of America and on the PGA Tour.
The first Golf Classic, known as the Sun Bowl College All-Star Golf Tournament at the time, was held Dec. 4-6, 1974 at El Paso Country Club. The tournament added to the numerous Sun Bowl events already in place. ![]() Tiger Woods at Sun Bowl Tournament Savane was the title sponsor of the tournament from 1994 through 2001. Western Refining Company signed on as the title sponsor in 2002. In 1974, Jerry Pate became the first Golf Classic champion. Over thirty years later, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic continues to feature tomorrow’s stars today.
