The 2006 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic marks the 32nd year of the event. Over the years, many Golf Classic competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and on the PGA Tour.

The first Golf Classic, known as the Sun Bowl College All-Star Golf Tournament at the time, was held Dec. 4-6, 1974 at El Paso Country Club. The tournament added to the numerous Sun Bowl events already in place.

El Paso Country Club head professional Bill Eschenbrenner, at that time, and Sun Carnival vice-president Stu Hammond worked on the format of the tournament. New Mexico State University’s head professional and past NCAA Golf President Herb Wimberly pitched the tournament’s idea to the NCAA Golf Coaches Association. The tournament champion would win a $1,000-scholarship for his respective college or university.

Twenty men's college all-star golfers competed in the inaugural tournament. The Golf Classic has been held every year since then, with the exception of 1987 when pending NCAA legislation resulted in the cancellation of the tournament. Today, each school is awarded a $1,000-scholarship for golfers that compete in the tournament.

Savane was the title sponsor of the tournament from 1994 through 2001. Western Refining Company signed on as the title sponsor in 2002.

In 1974, Jerry Pate became the first Golf Classic champion. Over thirty years later, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic continues to feature tomorrow’s stars today.
