 USF's George Selvie

TAMPA, Fla. - USF sophomore defensive end George Selvie was named a finalist for the 2007 Hendricks Award on Wednesday morning.

Selvie is one of eight finalists and the only selection from the BIG EAST.  The award is given annually to the top defensive end in college football.

Selvie is the player in USF history to be named a finalist for a national award.
"It's an honor and a blessing," said Selvie.  "I never thought any of this could happen this season.  I'm just going to continue to work hard and hope that the results continue to show up on game days."

Selvie has led the country in tackles for loss all season.  He has racked up 31.5 in 12 games and is just half a TFL short of tying the NCAA record. The Pensacola native will chase that mark in the 2007 Brut Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.
He also led the country for much of the season in sacks.  Selvie is currently second with a  USF single season record 14.5.

The Bulls defender is also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is given annually to college football's top defensive player. He will travel to Charlotte on Sunday to partake in festivities around the awards show, which is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m.

The other Hendricks Finalists are Eric Bakharti (San Diego), Maurice Evans (Penn State), Vernon Gholston (Ohio State), Greg Middleton (Indiana), Chris Long (Virginia), Nick Reed (Oregon) and Jonal Saint Dic (Michigan State).
The final round of voting for the Hendricks will occur on Dec. 3 with the award being announced on Dec. 5.
