ORU continues sweep with win over Butler
EL PASO, Texas (August 30, 2008) - A mature Oral Roberts University volleyball team (2-0) defeated an inexperienced Butler (1-1) in three straight games on Saturday afternoon at the Sun Bowl Invitational. ORU won 25-16, 25-19 and 25-21 to sweep the Bulldogs.
Senior outside hitter Jackie Olveira notched 10 kills to lead the Golden Eagles. Teammate and fellow hitter JoJo Souza added nine more kills and finished with a .667 attack percentage for a new Sun Bowl Invitational 3-game match record. Senior setter Thais Parada recorded 29 assists and six kills and senior libero Carol Garbato registered 10 digs.
Butler's attacks were held to a minimum as the team hit only a .170 against a tough ORU defense.
Bulldog sophomore Jessica Wolfe finished with a team-high 11 kills and sophomore Kelsey Labrum added nine more.
Oral Roberts hit .303 in the match with 39 kills while holding the Bulldogs below .200.
The opening set swayed in Butler's favor as they leaped to a 9-7 lead, but the Golden Eagles rallied 6-1 to close out the set.
Butler hitting struggled with 8 hitting errors to drop the second set with a six point deficit to ORU.
Tied at 16 late in the third game, ORU regained momentum with four consecutive points and pulled away from Butler.
The match ended with a Janete Ferreira kill assisted by Parada.
