Utah comes back, beats GaTech 30-27 in OT Sun Bowl
The Associated Press EL PASO, Texas — John White plowed into the end zone from 8 yards out to give Utah a 30-27 overtime victory against Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl on Saturday.
Justin Moore kicked a 34-yard field goal in Georgia Tech's overtime possession to take a three-point lead, but White finished a 115-yard rushing day with the game-winning score on his 26th carry.
The Utes (8-5) tied it in regulation when Jon Hays hit DeVonte Christopher with a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-14 with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter.The Yellow Jackets (8-5) drove to the Utah 31 with 2 seconds left, but David Scully missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt as time expired. Justin Moore had earlier missed two 42-yard tries for Tech.Georgia Tech lost its seventh straight bowl appearance and Utah improved to 7-1 in bowls under coach Kyle Whittingham.
Georgia Tech's Preston Lyons, who came in with only 39 carries, rushed for a career-best 140 yards on 18 carries and Tevin Washington passed for 137 yards and ran for 97.Utah grabbed a 7-0 lead on Shawn Asiata capped the game-opening drive with a 1-yard run.With David Sims out of with an injury and Orwin Smith also ailing, Georgia Tech relied heavily on Lyons, who put the Yellow Jackets on the board with a 36-yard run up the middle tie the game at 7.Lyons finished the first half with 129 yards on 12 carries.Coleman Peterson banked in a 25-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half to give the Utes a 10-7 lead.A 27-yard punt by Utah set up Moore's 32-yard field goal to tie it in the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets scored again on their next possession. Washington hit Embry Peeples with a 58-yard pass, then found Stephen Hill for a 31-yard touchdown to make it 17-10.Moments later, Quayshawn Nealy picked off a pass by Hays and returned it down the sideline 74 yards for a touchdown with 4:14 left in the third quarterHays hit Kendrick Moeai with a 3-yard touchdown pass with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter to make it 24-17.
Hays went 15 for 31 for 193 yards.

On the game:
"It was a heck of a football game and you have to take your hat off to Utah for the way the came back in the game. We had a lot of opportunities and we just couldn't capitalize. We didn't make enough plays and we missed three field goals. We couldn't block in the fourth quarter and the plays we needed to make just didn't happen. It feels like somebody kicked you in the gut. When you are competitive, it really hurts."
On the fourth quarter:
"We should have put the game away in the fourth quarter. We didn't let up. We ran most of the same plays in the fourth quarter that we ran in the rest of the game."
On the field goal miss at the end of regulation:
"We talked about it beforehand. I thought he hit the ball good and I actually thought it went in but I guess it was a few feet to the right."

"I just want to thank the Sun Bowl. It was a great week, fantastic week. One of the best bowl games I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. The way they handled their business and the things they had outlined for our team and the staff and the coaches was absolutely first class."
On game:
"Defensively real soft against the running game in the first half, they had a nice scheme and showed us stuff we didn't practice. It took us a while to adjust to that and we gave a bunch of rushing yards in the first half however only seven points, which is the bottom line. We did find a way out of a couple drives, they missed a couple of field goals and turned the ball over, so even though we did give up a lot of yard rushing in the first half we still came away relatively unscaved.
Second half, much better in the running game, but we still gave up some big plays in the throw game. The thing we did defensively that was disappointing was the big plays, the running plays in the first half, and the throw plays in the second half. However, the fourth quarter came around and we stiffened and got every stop we needed to get, thought about going for it on fourth and three down in our own territory with like 2:55 left, but we had all three timeouts our defense had been playing pretty well. We thought if we could get a three and out we could get the ball back with like 2:30 or something like that.

"They trusted me with the ball, so I saw Shawn Asiata blast somebody and I knew I was going to go in. As soon as the ball crossed the plain I looked up to the ref and saw his hands go up and knew it was a touchdown so I just wanted to go celebrate with my teammates."

"We just had to find our hearts and just try to go out there and win the game. We're down two touchdowns but after we scored one I knew we had a chance."

"This win means a lot, it's a long off-season like six or seven months of conditioning, lifting weights, just to be going to the off-season with a win definitely keeps the moral up and makes you work harder in the off-season because you know what you're capable of."

Pregame
Georgia Tech is appearing in its 15th consecutive bowl game and enters the game 22-17 in bowl games.
Utah is appearing in 17 bowl appearance in program history. The Utes defeated New Mexico 26-0 in the 1939 Sun Bowl, it's first ever bowl appearance.
First Quarter
Utah kicked off and defends the north goal. Kick off was at 12:24 p.m. (MT).
Georgia Tech opened up with a 51 yard pass that was called back due to an offensive pas interference call. It is the second consecutive game that GTU has opened with a pass play that was called back due to a penalty.
Utah used seven plays, driving 73 yards in two minutes 48 seconds to score and take a 7-0 lead. This is the third consecutive Sun Bowl where at least one of the teams has scored on its first possession.
Georgia Tech fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter for the third straight game.
Georgia Tech missed a 42-yard field goal with 7:18 left in the first quarter.
Utah recovered a fumble (92) with 2:47 left in the quarter. Fumble recovery by No. 92 Jason Peters.
Georgia Tech posted 102 yards rushing compared to Utah's four rushing yards in the first quarter. Georgia Tech's Lyons averaged 16.2 yards per carry in the quarter. Lyon's 58-yard run in the first quarter was by far the longest of his career (previous long – 36 yards v. Kansas, Sept. 17)
Utah's Sean Sellwood averaged 62.0 yards per punt in the quarter with a 65 yard punt as a long. Sellwood came into the game averaging 44.2 yards per punt and has a season-long punt of 67 yards.
Second Quarter
Georgia Tech picked up a first down on 4-and-1 on an offside penalty with 6:20 left in the second quarter.
Georgia Tech kicker missed his second 42-yard field goal of the day with 2:55 left in the second quarter.
Utah calls a timeout with 24.5 seconds on the clock, which is immediately followed by a timeout by Georgia Tech (with 24.5 seconds on the clock).
No. 95 Coleman Peterson hits at 25-yard field goal, hitting the right post to go up 10-7 with 14.6 seconds left in the first half. The scoring drive was eight plays, 67 yards two minutes 41 seconds.
First Half
Georgia Tech out-ran the Utes 225-69 with Preston Lyons posting 129 rushing yards and one touchdown for the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech fumbled the ball twice and lost it once, while Utah did not fumble the ball in the first half of play.
The Yellow Jackets were 3-of-7 on third down conversions and Utah was 1-of-5 on third down conversions.
Utah's Sean Sellwood averaged 57.3 yards per punt in the first half (three punts). The Sun Bowl record for punt average is 50.0 yards by Mississippi State's Dana Moore in 1980.
Georgia Tech All-American offensive guard Omoregie Uzzi did not play because of an injury, snapping a streak of 25 consecutive games started.
Georgia Tech's seven first-half points were its fewest at intermission since scoring seven in the first half at Maimi, Oct. 22.
Third Quarter
Georgia Tech kicker Justin Moore kicks a 32-yard field to tie the game at 10-10 with 10:27 left in the third quarter. The scoring drive was eight plays, 32 yards in four minutes and four seconds.
Georgia Tech completed a 58-yard pass play to the Utah 29-yard line for a first down. The 58-yard pass play was the longest passing play of the day for the Yellow Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets finished the drive with a 31-yard passing touchdown to take a 17-10 lead with 4:43 left in the quarter. The scoring drive was four plays, 87 yards in two minutes, 11 seconds.
Utah ran the ensuing kick off back to the Yellow Jacket 30 yard line.
Georgia Tech picked off a pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. The Yellow Jackets went up 24-10 with 4:15 left in the third quarter. Pass was intercepted by red shirt freshman Quayshawn Nealy. It was his first career interception for a touchdown and the second interception of his career. His first interception came against Maryland.
Fourth Quarter
After its first drive in the fourth quarter, Utah was 1-of-9 on third down conversions.
Utah scored on a three yard pass play caught by Kendrick Moeai with 6:50 left in the game. The drive went 10 plays covering 71 yards in four minutes, 16 seconds. It was Moeai's first touchdown reception of the year.
Overtime
This was the first overtime played in Sun Bowl history.
Final
Georgia Tech ended the game out-rushing the Utes 311-144.
The Yellow Jackets had three players with more than 50 yards rushing, with Preston Lyons leading all rushers with 140 yards on the day.
Utah had four players with double-digit tackle numbers, compared to Georgia Tech's one.
This is the third Sun Bowl in four years where the game was decided by five points or less.
